This 55+ retirement community is conveniently close to loads of shopping, restaurants, medical facilities, and movie theaters, as well as to downtown Phoenix and the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.
In addition to the convenient location, the Ahwatukee Foothills are surrounded by scenic mountains, walking and biking trails, and several golf courses.
The Ahwatukee Retirement Village is an active adult 55+ retirement neighborhood of single-family homes and townhomes located within the larger multi-generational master-planned community of Ahwatukee Foothills.
The Ahwatukee Recreation Center (ARC) opened its doors in 1974 to serve the retirement area of a community developed by Presley Company of Arizona (Elvis Presley’s uncle). Presley had the concept of a separate retirement area within a typical community.
Some of the houses and many of the patio homes enjoy golf course views and are within walking distance or an easy golf cart ride to the Ahwatukee Country Club.
The active adult neighborhoods offer single family homes or small single-level patio homes. Many of the patio homes have golf course lots, and provide a “lock and leave” maintenance-free lifestyle.
Single family homes were mostly built during the 1970’s and would need some updating to satisfy the needs of today’s retirees, but buyers who purchase here love the convenience and beauty of the area, and believe that updating a home is a fair exchange for the area and neighborhood.
Ahwatukee (“Ahwatukee Foothills Village”) is a bedroom community located just 15 minutes south of downtown Phoenix. The town was named after the Crow words awe chuuke, meaning “land on the other side of the hill,” or “land in the next valley, because Ahwatukee is separated from Phoenix proper by the scenic South Mountains, which provide dramatic views and challenging walking trails.
In 1971 the 35.8 square-mile village was purchased by the Presley Company, owned by Elvis Presley’s uncle. Although annexed by the City of Phoenix, many of its residents consider it a separate city. Ahwatukee currently has a population of approximately 85,000 people and is considered one of Phoenix’s 15 urban villages.
Picturesque views in an environmentally rich location with excellent schools, neighborhood restaurants, eclectic boutiques, and 21 nature parks all within a few minutes commute to downtown Phoenix, make Ahwatukee one of the most desirable locations in the Valley of the Sun.
